If it feels like ticks are everywhere right now, that’s not just your imagination. Early 2026 data suggests this may be a rough tick season in much of the United States. CDC said weekly emergency room visit rates for tick bites were higher than usual in every U.S. region except the South Central region, and were the highest for this time of year since 2017.
What the Early 2026 Data Is Showing
That does not automatically mean every area will have the exact same experience all season long, and the year’s data is still early. But it does mean people should pay attention. Johns Hopkins researchers said emergency department visits for tick bites were up more than 25 percent in April 2026 compared with the previous April, and one expert said the early signs point toward a very bad year.
Why Tick Activity May Be So High This Year
There probably is not just one reason behind the increase. Experts are pointing to a combination of warmer temperatures, longer periods of tick activity, and environmental changes that support the animals ticks feed on. Johns Hopkins noted that ticks are expanding northward and into higher elevations as warmer conditions make it easier for them to survive through winter.
It Is Not Just About Lyme Disease
Many people hear “ticks” and think only of Lyme disease, but that is not the whole picture. Lyme disease remains the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, and the CDC estimates that about 476,000 patients are treated for it each year. At the same time, CDC has also warned about other serious tick-related conditions, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever and alpha-gal syndrome. That makes prevention especially important during an active tick year.
What You Should Do Right Now
The good news is that awareness and preparation go a long way. CDC recommends using EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing permethrin-treated clothing when possible, checking for ticks after spending time outdoors, and removing attached ticks as soon as possible. CDC also notes that removing a tick attached for 24 hours or less can help reduce the risk of Lyme disease.
