How to Remove Ticks from Dogs: A Guide to Keep Your Furry Friend Safe

Ticks can be a pesky problem for our furry friends, but fear not! We’re here to help you learn how to safely and effectively remove ticks from your dogs and prevent future tick encounters. In this blog, we’ll go over the steps to remove ticks, why the Original Tick Key™ is the best tool for the job, and how to keep your dog protected.

Checking Your Dog for Ticks Regularly

Conducting regular tick checks is crucial to keeping your dog safe from ticks. Make it a habit to inspect your dog after each walk or play session outdoors. Part the fur and begin searching slowly, paying special attention to areas where ticks love to hide, such as the ears, under the collar, between the toes, and in the skin folds.

For large dogs, we recommend getting someone to help out while you check (and remove)- dogs can get pretty squirmy!

The Safe and Proper Way to Remove Ticks

First things first, gather your supplies. You’ll need the Original Tick Key™, which is designed for proper and efficient removal, making it the safest and most practical option for tick removal. In addition to your Original Tick Key™, you should grab a pair of gloves and some rubbing alcohol or antiseptic wipes.

  1. Put on your gloves to protect yourself from any potential tick-borne diseases.
  2. Gently part your dog’s fur to get a clear view of the tick.
  3. Using the Original Tick Key™, slide the tick into the slot until it’s snug against your dog’s skin.
  4. Steadily pull the key away from the tick, sliding flush against the skin.
  5. Once the tick is removed, clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic wipe.
  6. Dispose of the tick by placing it in a sealed bag, flushing it down the toilet, or drowning it in rubbing alcohol.

After removing and disposing of the tick, monitor your dog for any signs of tick-borne illnesses. Symptoms to watch for include limping, lethargy, loss of appetite, and joint pain. If you notice any of these signs, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Of course, don’t forget to comfort your pup with lots of treats and belly rubs!
