It’s important to keep your yard and family tick-free. Nobody wants to come in from a nice day in the yard to find that they, their pet, or their family has been bitten by a tick. And while many think harsh chemical pesticides are the answer- they can cause adverse reactions in both humans and animals. To ensure total safety, below are some natural ways to protect your yard (and your family!) from ticks.
Essential Oils
Many people use essential oils in their homes- but did you know that certain essential oils have been shown to deter pesky ticks? Some oils known for repelling ticks are:
- Neem.
- Cedar.
- Eucalyptus.
- Peppermint.
As always, many essential oils must be diluted with a carrier oil. Double-check instructions carefully. If you have an oil you want to use on or around your pet, double-check with your vet.
Natural and Pet-Safe Remedies
While essential oils work for some, others prefer a less fragrant option. Below are some natural and generally pet-safe remedies to keep your yard tick free:
- Food-grade diatomaceous earth.
- Natural tick spray that can be sprayed around your yard monthly.
- Plants such as: Rosemary, mint, sage, lemongrass, marigolds, and lavender.
Note: Certain plants are magnets for ticks. Keep your yard free of:
- Long grass.
- Brush piles.
- Overgrown plants.
- Honeysuckle.
- Barberry.
As always, consult your vet to ensure anything your pet can get into will be safe. For extra ease, if you have a landscaper, you can ask them if they offer all-natural and pet-safe tick sprays. Many do, and sometimes all it takes is keeping your furry friend indoors for an hour or so before letting them enjoy a tick-free yard!
